This real micro wedding in Cardiff was shaped by strict pandemic restrictions in Wales, but that only made its intimate character even more visible. Only the couple and their witnesses were allowed at the ceremony, and even I wasn’t permitted inside the registry office. What remained was a small, personal celebration focused entirely on the two of them — exactly the kind of day that shows what a micro wedding can really feel like.
A Unique Challenge During a Cardiff Micro Wedding
A real micro wedding in Cardiff can feel surprisingly personal and intimate. This situation posed an interesting challenge. With no access to the ceremony itself, the couple and I had to be creative in making the most of the photo opportunities we did have. We decided to compensate for the restrictions with a beautiful outdoor photoshoot in front of Cardiff City Hall and Alexandra Gardens, two iconic locations often chosen for small weddings in the city. While this may not have been the original plan, the backdrop of these grand, historic buildings provided a beautiful setting for photos that still felt true to the day.

Flexibility and Creativity
What was initially planned as a quick session ended up lasting a bit longer. Sometimes, the best-laid plans change for the better! As we took advantage of the beautiful surroundings and perfect weather, we extended the shoot and captured more moments than originally intended. I always aim to provide a bit more than expected for my couples, and in this case, I delivered more photos than we had agreed upon, to remember their special day — and to show how much can happen when you simply give things space and let them unfold.
Blending Spontaneity with Personal Touches
The atmosphere of this Cardiff micro wedding was naturally relaxed. Small gestures, quiet pauses and bursts of laughter carried more meaning than anything overly planned ever could. At the same time, the bride had a few ideas for portraits she wanted to include, so the session became a mix of spontaneous moments and a handful of personal touches. That balance suited the day perfectly and kept the gallery honest to the couple rather than tied to any rigid formula.
The Beauty of Micro Weddings
Micro weddings offer a level of intimacy and personalisation that larger weddings sometimes lack. They allow the focus to remain squarely on the couple, with less of the pressure that often accompanies bigger celebrations. In this case, the small scale of the wedding allowed us to focus on capturing truly intimate moments between the couple. The lack of a large crowd or distractions enabled them to fully immerse themselves in the moment — something quietly reflected in this candid wedding portrait, among others — which is one of the reasons I love photographing intimate weddings.
If you’re wondering whether hiring a photographer for a tiny wedding is worth it, this short post might help you decide.
Why Micro Wedding Photography Works So Well
What makes micro weddings work so well photographically is the space they create. There is usually more flexibility, less pressure, and more room for moments to unfold naturally. Whether that happens in front of Cardiff City Hall, in a quiet garden, or somewhere else meaningful, smaller celebrations often make it easier to focus on what the day actually feels like rather than how it is supposed to look.
